How to Lace the Nike Air Force 1

Published: by Jack Aldrich

Designed by Bruce Kilgore and first making its way onto the market back in 1982, the Nike Air Force 1 is by no means a new sneaker silhouette. However, even today, it’s one of the best-selling sneakers on the market and remains a go-to option for both sneaker and fashion fans alike. The iconic design is favoured due to its simplicity, as well as the optimum comfort provided from the Air unit that’s concealed within the midsole.

There have been plenty of coloruways and collaborations launched over the years, however more often than not it’s the classic triple-white colourway that remains a best-seller. Here at Crepslocker we’re huge advocates of the Air Force 1, it’s easily one of the most versatile and wearable sneakers ever made. Many of our customers favour the AF1, however we’re often asked what the best way to lace the popular silhouette is? There are of course multiple methods, but we’re here to settle the score and showcase the best possible ways to lace your ‘Forces, so let’s get straight into it!

AF1 Off-WhiteHow to Lace Air Force 1 Lows

Easily the most popular AF1 rendition, the Air Force 1 Low offers a sleek and stylish design, sitting somewhere between slimline and chunky, creating a look that can be easily matched with plenty of different outfits. Featuring a total of eight lace holes, the AF1 Low is a sneaker that we usually advise lacing using every hole. While some sneakers may look best leaving one or two empty, this is not the case with the AF1 Low.

Air Force 1s do often come laced from the factory, however it’s often a sloppy job and we’d advise relacing your fresh kicks. Start from the bottom two holes and measure equal length at the end of your lace, follow the popular “over-under” method and be sure to leave ample room when lacing each line. Keep your lacing consistent throughout and lace all the way to the top for a clean look.

AF1 Rope LacesHow to Lace Air Force 1 Highs

The Air Force 1 High instead offers 10 lace holes, as well as a Velcro strap in order to keep the kicks secured firmly on feet. While with the low-tops we advised lacing all the way up, with the high-top variant, leaving one or two of the top holes empty can create a more relaxed look. Of course, like anything we advise here, this is down to the wearer to decide. Follow the same “over-under” method as we advised for the low-tops, and be sure to leave enough room for a comfortable fit.

When it comes to the Velcro strap, there are multiple options on how to wear it. Some sneakerheads prefer to leave this strap totally open, in order to create a more casual and “street” look. However, if you prefer a tighter fit or just a cleaner look, you can also close it. Once again, this is down to the wearer to decide for themselves.

Supreme AF1Tight or Loose Lacing?

One of the major decisions to make when it comes to lacing any sneaker is just how tight or loose you want your sneakers. Not only does this affect the look of your kicks, it will also make a huge difference regarding how they feel. Loose laced sneakers will feel a little more relaxed, however they can often slip off the feet and will feel more like slippers. Tighter laced footwear will offer a supportive and functional feel, more suited if you’re actually planning on running or working out.

The reality is, you have to assess your needs and work out what you prefer as a wearer. One thing to note is that if you lace your sneakers too tight, this can potentially cause damage to the uppers of your kicks, as the additional stress can cause materials to crack or buckle under the pressure. For this reason, never lace your sneakers to their limits.

Sup x AF1Alternate Laces?

While many sneakerheads will be familiar with the concept of alternate laces, there are many new footwear fans that deserve to know about this hidden gem of knowledge. If you’re growing tired of a pair of sneakers and wish they looked a little different, then you can transform the entire look of your kicks by simply swapping out the laces. Many pairs will come with alternate laces already included, meaning the brand has thought about potential options. However, there are also a wide-range of aftermarket laces available to purchase online, meaning the customisation options really are endless! There are even crazy lace styles such as the Air Force 1 Rope Laces, creating a wild look that’s sure to turn a few heads when worn!
