Inside the Audemars Piguet x Swatch Surprise: Meet the Royal Pop Collection

Published: by Peter Coyne

The collaboration no one expected has landed and it is impossible to ignore. When Audemars Piguet and Swatch revealed a joint project, the reaction moved from online shock to real world conversation, with people stopping strangers to ask if it was true. The surprise felt fitting, two very different Swiss watchmakers coming together to make something playful, loud, and unpretentious.

Say hello to Royal Pop, an eight-piece collection that mashes up Audemars Piguet's Royal Oak DNA with the modular fun of the 1980s POP Swatch. Instead of a single release you can buy online, the drop is deliberately physical and social, one watch per day, per person, sold in Swatch stores only starting May 16. Expect queues, group chats and some serious planning if you want to try your luck.

Royal Pop is presented in a pocket watch format rather than a wrist watch. The concept leans into POP Swatch nostalgia while reinterpreting Audemars Piguet's signature octagonal bezel and grid-like dial pattern. You can wear it on a lanyard or display it on the removable stand that converts into a desk clock. The models come in vivid colourways, including multi-tone palettes, and the movement is dressed with halftone dots and primary colour cues that nod to Pop Art. That decoration can be seen through a sapphire crystal back.

Materials and build are a Swatch-style take on Swiss craftsmanship. Each piece is made from Swatch's Swiss-made Bioceramic, a mix of ceramic powder and bio-sourced plastic that keeps the watches light and playful. Inside, the design references Audemars Piguet's Royal Oak while remaining accessible in both price and presentation.

This collaboration is framed as more than a fashion moment. For Swatch, it is a cultural statement about making art and heritage available to more people. For Audemars Piguet, it is an investment in the future of the craft. AP's leadership says the goal is to excite a younger generation about watchmaking and to fund initiatives that preserve the skills needed to keep the industry alive. Audemars Piguet has pledged 100 percent of proceeds from this collaboration to a program that supports the transmission of watchmaking skills. That means buying one of these pieces contributes directly to training the next generation of watchmakers.

Purists may grumble and some buyers will flip models on the secondary market, but the core idea here is inclusion. Royal Pop is a deliberate invitation: see the mechanics, start a conversation, and maybe discover a deeper appreciation for mechanical watchmaking.
