How to Clean Jordans

Published: by Jack Aldrich

Here at Crepslocker we often find our customers asking us the same questions, one of which being how should they clean their Air Jordans? Most Jordans aren’t exactly cheap, so it’s only right that anyone who owns a pair is going to want to keep them clean. Unfortunately, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to cleaning sneakers, however there are some easy rules to follow to make sure you’re headed down the right path. For starters, we’d always recommend using dedicated sneaker cleaning products for any footwear maintenance, as common household products may not work and could even damage your prized sneakers! It’s also often worth taking a long-game approach, tackling sections of the sneaker on at a time.

Of course, once your sneakers are finally clean, you’re going to want to protect them too. Thankfully, here at Crepslocker we’ve devised a full-length guide on how to clean your Jordans with the best possible outcome, so strap yourself in as we’re about to explain things down to every little detail! So without any further hesitation, let’s get those Jordans sparkling clean once and for all.

AJ1 High SilverWhy are Jordans Difficult to Clean?

We often hear of sneakerheads complaining that Jordans are difficult to clean, but just why exactly is that? The truth is, Jordans aren’t any more difficult to clean than plenty of other sneakers. What makes things tricky is that the same approach won’t work on every single pair in your collection. As well as this, Jordans are often composed of many different panels and sections, making cleaning them with one single approach complicated. However, with the correct technique and the correct products, cleaning your Jordans can be made into an easy task.

Over the next few sections we’ll detail exactly how to tackle your Air Jordans, meaning you can never worry about them looking dirty again! We’ll also cover preventative measures for the future, making sure that your Jordans stay in top condition, meaning you’ll have to clean them less frequently too.

Different Fabric, Different Approach

What makes cleaning Jordans difficult is the fact that no two pairs are the same. For a start, there’s countless different silhouettes, such as Air Jordan 1s, Air Jordan 4s and Air Jordan 11s, with the design across each silhouette varying significantly. When it comes to the cleaning specifics, it’s well worth taking a look at what fabric you’re trying to clean. Many sneakers are crafted from leather or faux-leather, which is one of the easiest sneaker fabrics to clean. In this case, most dirt can simply be wiped off using dedicated sneaker cleaning wipes. For more stubborn stains, we’d advise using a sneaker cleaning solution and a medium-bristled brush.

Another commonly used sneaker material is suede, which is one of the more difficult fabrics to tackle. The intricate texture of the material means it needs specific materials to clean it effectively, such as a suede brush and a suede/nubuck restorer. Thankfully, these are commonly available at sneaker retailers around the UK, and we even stock our very own as part of our sneaker cleaning collection right here at Crepslocker.

AJ3 WizardsChoose Your Product Wisely

There’s a whole range of different sneaker cleaning products on the market, which can make choosing the right product for your sneakers difficult. To start, assess what fabric your kicks are made out of, as this will drastically change which product you purchase. It’s also worth taking a look at how dirty your sneakers actually are. If you’re looking to just get rid of a few scuffs and marks, a sneaker eraser or sneaker wipes may cover the job easily, meaning you won’t have to waste time conducting an in-depth clean. However, if you’re looking at serious damage or stains, you’ll want to go down the route of a clean involving sneaker cleaning solution and a relevant brush.

It goes without saying, but we’ll also always stress the importance of reading the instructions before using cleaning products on your sneakers. We’ve seen plenty of horror stories where sneakers have been subjected to damage or staining that’s only due to user error. A product is only as good as the person using it!

Prevent Future Damage

Okay, so you’ve finally got your Jordans clean again, but that wasn’t easy, right? Most of us don’t enjoy cleaning our sneakers regularly, but thankfully there’s an easy fix for that too. By using sneaker protection products such as protection sprays, you can protect your prized Air Jordans from water damage, stains and many other undesirables. Simply apply the spray to your kicks and away you go. It’s also worth being selective about the pairs you wear often. Some Jordans are way tougher when put up against wet weather conditions than others. Consider leather pairs over suede in the colder months for a safer bet. Above all, be sure to keep your sneakers fresh with regular wipe downs, that way they’ll look their best and you can continue to show off your collection!
